What:
Prehistoric Maori fortification and place of residence built on a volcanic cone. There is little on site interpretation. It is one of the best preserved cone pa in the Auckland field. If you visit only one to see an intact site this is the one.
A summit road has caused some damage. A water reservoir formerly near the summit has been removed and the location restored.
At the nearby Ambury Regional Park some of the Maori garden field system that formerly occupied all of the volcanic outflow around the cone can be seen, but the best example is a little further away at Otuataua Stonefields.
There is a visitor center for the cone and the area on Coronation Road east of the cone. Mangere Mountain Education Centre. http://www.mangeremountain.co.nz/ Check the website for opening times.
