What:

Prehistoric Maori fortification and place of residence built on a volcanic cone. There is a little on site interpretation. Be sure to get away from the summit where modern road and a water reservoir have destroyed the Maori evidence. Look out for terracing for living areas and defence and kumara storage pits.

The motorway built to the north of the site threatened to damage the site. At a planning hearing the Volcanic Cones Protection Society successfully resisted this and the road was moved northwards with much less effect on the cone.

Archaeological investigation preceded the construction of the reservoir [1]

What else to do there:

Great views over the inner city and Manukau Harbour. Nearby are Mt Albert and One Tree Hill.
